Report on the 1/18, 1/25 and 2/1/06 Workshops

“The Basics of Finding and Successfully
Competing for Good Jobs”

-A 3 Part Series-

A total of 64 people were in attendance at the workshops during these three nights:

1/18/06            “How to Find Good Jobs”
1/25/06            “How to Develop Effective Resumes”
2/1/06              “How to Have an Effective Interview and Then Follow Up”

The following information was given at each of the workshops:

“How to Find Good Jobs”

-the film “Celebrate What’s Right With the World” was shown, teaching the possibilities in having the right and positive attitude
-the LDS Career Workshop Manual was given to each person and used throughout the entire 3 part series
-where people look for jobs vs. where people find jobs
-more jobs are available in small companies than in large companies
-principles in successful networking, building a network, using it and asking the right
 questions
-developing a successful job search plan:  the weekly plan, the daily plan and the target plan.
-having contacts be network contacts
-creating “me in 30 seconds” statement and where to use it
-internet sites to research and find leads in your job search
-making these leads into a  network lead and contact
-examples of good internet sites:

            -www.ldsemployment.org
            -www.indeed.com
            -www.simplyhired.com
            -www.kitlist.org

-resources in career planning and finding the career that is best for me

“How to Develop Effective Resumes”

-a review on “What Works” as related to last week’s presentation on how to find jobs
-13 networking mistakes
-the purpose of a resume:  “To Get You an Interview”
-resume check list and guide lines for resumes to be scanned
-having your resume be persuasive and have personality
-make statements about results that are measurable
-use power statements
-show that you are a results oriented person
-the Network resume, the Chronological resume, the Functional resume
-review of sample resumes showing:  easy to read, first glance, number of pages,
 documented achievements, quotes, education bullets and key words
-building a resume if you don’t have one
-cover letters and thank you notes

“How to Have an Effective Interview
and Then Follow Up”

-a review on “What Works” as related to last week’s presentation on resumes
-the purpose of the interview is to get an offer
-where hiring decisions are made
-interview tips and preparing for the interview—the first impressions
-employer hot buttons
-understanding the anatomy of the job interview
-types of questions and making power statements into home run statements
-past tense to current tense to future tense
-handling the negative questions and turning them into positive answers
-knowing how to handle the behavior based questions
-what they really want to see in your answer
-what to say when the salary question is asked:  negotiations, strategies and tips
-questions to ask the interviewer
-keeping the ball in your court when the interview comes to an end
-the follow up
-the thank you note
-what to do next
